Black is the most practical finish for a waterproof trail shoe, and the ACG Zegama Trail GTX makes good use of it. Peat, mud and wet leaf stains barely show, so the shoe keeps looking respectable through a whole winter of use. Inside, Gore-Tex holds out rain and spray while the deep tread stays dependable on slick stone and waterlogged ground.

Use it from late autumn through to spring, for dark evening runs on flooded tracks and for hikes that involve more puddle than path. The midsole carries enough cushioning for long, slow miles rather than short fast ones. A firm heel counter and reinforced toe add the durability that wet, gritty conditions tend to demand from footwear.
