If you are buying your first proper running shoe, the Pegasus 41 in Ghost is a sound place to start. Nothing about it is specialised: it handles walk-run intervals, a first five kilometres and the long build to a half marathon without asking anything unusual of your stride. The pale grey finish keeps it versatile enough for the gym and the commute too.

ReactX foam does the cushioning, firm enough to feel connected to the road and soft enough to absorb a heel landing. Air Zoom units sit under the forefoot and heel for a touch of rebound. The engineered mesh upper is forgiving across the instep, which matters a great deal when you are still learning what a good running fit should feel like.
