Nike Pegasus Trail 5 GTX

The Pegasus Trail 5 GTX takes the most popular road-to-trail shoe Nike makes and seals it against the weather. Gore-Tex keeps rain, spray and wet grass out, so the shoe works through the months when trails stay soaked. The tread is a compromise by design, smooth enough for tarmac and patterned enough for gravel and soft dirt.

It is ideal when a run starts on pavement, crosses a muddy park and then finishes on road again, which describes most winter training. Cushioning is plentiful and forgiving for steady mileage, and the gusseted tongue stops grit getting in. On steep, greasy mountain descents a deeper-lugged trail shoe will hold better than this one.
