The second-generation Cloudmonster smooths the ride of the original, with the big CloudTec pods retuned so the transition from heel to toe feels less abrupt while the cushioning stays every bit as deep as before. The result is a softer shoe that behaves more predictably underfoot.

That makes it a sensible anchor for a women's training week: easy runs, long runs and the slower portions of a marathon build. The Speedboard inside gives the soft platform some direction, the upper is secure without being warm, and the outsole rubber holds up over repeated miles on tarmac and hard-packed path. Black also hides a winter's worth of road spray rather well.
