The Fresh Foam X Hierro v8 is New Balance's cushioned trail shoe, and the softest one it makes — the midsole measured 9.1 on the Shore A scale in lab testing, far softer than almost anything else built for off-road. Underneath sits a Vibram Eco-Step outsole with 4 mm lugs, which is enough for gravel, dirt and grass without turning the shoe into a mud specialist.
