On Cloudboom Max W Reef

Reef puts a warmer, coral-leaning finish on the women's Cloudboom Max, which is easy to pick out in a start pen of black and white shoes. Underneath, On has built a long-distance racer: a high, springy midsole with a carbon plate, meant for runners holding a set pace across a half or full marathon. The colour is the only part of it that is not strictly functional.

Spring and summer race seasons are where it gets used, alongside the few long runs each block that are run at goal effort. The thin upper breathes in heat and keeps the foot centred on the platform, while the cushioning carries enough depth to stay kind to the legs in the closing stages. In warm races, that breathability matters more than most runners expect.
