Alphafly 3 vs Vaporfly 4: which race shoe

Nike sells two carbon-plated racing shoes, and the question comes up before every race season: which one. The honest answer is that the distance decides, not the price.

35 grams apart. On a marathon that is a real difference in both directions — lighter is easier to carry, taller is easier on the legs after two hours.

Alphafly 3: the marathon shoe

The Alphafly stacks three systems: a full-length ZoomX midsole, a carbon Flyplate, and two Air Zoom pods under the forefoot that load on landing and release at push-off. It is the most cushioned and the most stable of the two over long distance, and it is the shoe Nike’s marathon athletes race in.

Nike smoothed the transition compared with the Alphafly 2, which is the change that makes it holdable across a full marathon rather than only a fast 10K.

Vaporfly 4: the sharp one

At around 166 grams the Vaporfly 4 is the lightest super shoe Nike makes, and Nike got there by hollowing out sections of the ZoomX midsole rather than cutting stack height. The result is quicker and more direct underfoot, with a narrower platform.

That narrowness is the trade-off. Over 5K and 10K it feels precise. Over a marathon, tired legs on a narrow platform is a harder ask, and heavier runners tend to prefer the Alphafly for the distance.

Which one

• Marathon — Alphafly 3. More cushioning where it matters, more stability at hour three.
• 5K and 10K — Vaporfly 4. Lighter, sharper, and the extra stack of the Alphafly earns you nothing over 20 minutes.
• Half marathon — genuinely either. Lighter runners chasing a time tend to pick the Vaporfly; anyone who wants their legs intact afterwards picks the Alphafly.
• Training — neither, beyond a handful of sharpening sessions. Both are race shoes and both wear out fast used daily.

Before you buy
